DESCRIPTION

I currently hold a Senior Marie Curie Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Here, I work on the fatigue modelling and experimentation of CFRP composites used in tidal turbine applications. My activities and interests are concurrently in the fields of biomimesis and bioinspired science and I research a number of different biological organisms from a fundamental point of view, as well as a variety of materials and processing applications from a more applied perspective. My goals are ultimately to holistically characterise and mimic specialised physico-chemical and microstructural qualities and functionalities of biological origin. I work closely with several research groups around the world primarily at the moment in East Africa, South Africa, Singapore and Indonesia.

I have been awarded a 5 year appointment as Adjunct Professor of Composite Materials and Biostructures for the period: 1st July 2013 to 30th June 2018 at Abo Akademi University, Finland, situated in Prof. Martti Toivakka's laboratory of Paper Coating and Converting. I completed my PhD at the University of Bath, UK under the supervision of Dr. Martin Ansell in 2004. I have been awarded a Biomimetics Workstation (MoU with Dr. Eko Agus Suyono and Dr. Budi Daryono) at the Department of Marine Biology, Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia, where I am a Visiting Professor. I am an Associate Editor of the De Gruyter Open Chemistry Book Series and am on the Editorial Board for SpringerPlus. I am a Chartered Engineer with the Institution for Mechanical Engineers, have been awarded a Professional Certificate in Innovation and Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), and am also a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, United Kingdom.

IN MY FREE TIME !

Outside of my work, research and lecturing I spend time raising my kids, with my wife and busying myself in charity work. We enjoy snowboarding, skiing, swimming, athletic and gymnastic activities, doing various martial arts and playing music.

I am the founder of an organisation for street children and orphans called "FIGHTING FOR LIVES". We run projects to help street children and orphans around the world and raise the money primarily through martial arts. We work hard to bring joy to the lives of these kids and currently have projects in Kenya, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
